I have this issue running an Ubuntu 12.04.5 guest (running kernel
3.13.0-43-generic) on a KVM Hypervisor with the same configuration
(Ubuntu 12.04.5, 3.13.0-43, CPU 4x AMD Opteron(TM) Processor 6274, Dell

It will not disable the input/outpout sound but only physical pluggin
detection. You will have to select with or alsamixer (CLI), or alsa
sound GUI or PulseAudio Volume Control GUI.
IMHO better a manual working setup than a non working automatic.
Temporary or definitive fix it's up to you as it
i installed the 3.18 mainline kernel and will report when that happens
again. since i dont know how to trigger that it will take some time.

thanks for your reply, which prompted me to retest what i thought i had
done, wherepon i found it was my mistake - i had mistaken the media id
of my smartphone for the id of the hd partition where i keep all my own
files so i dont lose them when xubuntu next gets itself into an
unworkable state.
Krzysztof, you should be using 3.13.0-39 patched by me (the newer
version is the vanilla Ubuntu kernel which does not support MST).
Regarding your question about cables: you should not worry about that.

On 14.10, just hit this problem, too. I installed the newest NVIDIA
driver. Everything worked and an update for Xorg came in, now I get the
same error messages and behavior... I hit this some time back when I was
mucking around with graphics drivers if I remember correctly...

Hmm, I'm not sure I follow exactly how you are getting this freeze. A
few questions:
1. When you say notifications, do you mean the indicators on the top right of
the screen such as time, volume, session, etc?
2. Are you using a mouse, touchscreen, or something else?
