In response to the suggestion to create fresh installation media I
downloaded 14.04 again (I originally reported the bug with 14.10 but had
previously hit issues with 14.04). Firstly, this is 14.04.02 now and
I've double-checked the MD5 sum before creating bootable instance on an
8GB USB stick.

offset=8
to create cryptswap that survives rebooting :-)

Lonnie, I have this same laptop. When booting the 3.14 or higher
kernels, you don't get a screen freeze at boot unless running
nomodeset or the proprietary Nvidia drivers? I boot with the kernel
mode nomodeset, but then I don't have any way to control brightness.
