OK - the memory hog was the original error I had with our original
(sadly proprietary) source code - before I added ulimit and stripped it

This is an awful bug-report I’ve done.

My original problem was I couldn’t install software from the Ubuntu
Software App in the dock, because everything was displayed as a little
lozenge with an ellipses (…) in it.

I have tested the proposed packages with success on VM snapshots from
both before and after the issue originally occurred.
I believe I've also tracked down the source of the problem to failing to
upgrade Compiz from "1:0.9.12.2+16.04.20160526-0ubuntu1" to
"1:0.9.12.2+16.04.20160714-0ubuntu1" when

localedata patches. These are the changes I made:
ckb_IQ-new_locale.diff, eo_US.diff, sd_PK.diff, ug...@latin.diff

Lockscreen doesn't turn off the screen (saw it via Bug # 1292041 now closed)
Ctrl=Alt+L or Super+L shortcut works and blanks the screen
requiring me to type my password again to activate session.
However my System-Settings -> Brightness & Lock is set to:
Turn screen off when
