I think this is not a problem of empathy its rather the way facebook
chat behaves. in my case the username s are shown as
u3235...@chat.facebook.com please ask you contact to register their
username by opening facebook.com/username then you will see their
username. and also facebook chat is not off
as we chatted at IRC and it seems that this problem is not related to
empathy its the problem at you end as you were not even able to install
empathy from the telepathy ppa. can you please run ubuntu from a live cd

gwibber social accounts and gwibber social settings are not differentiated in
as you said that it does not appear in the gnome-menus then the issue is not
netbook-launcher when it will appear in gnome-menus it should also appear in
netbook launcher.
btw I just installed thunderbird and it appears in gnome-menus as well as
netbook launcher.
