development versions. Some builds of squeezecenter work; others do not,

I suspect that the crash which apport is reporting on my system is the
same as this one. It happened on the first login to KDE after I had
applied a dist-upgrade on 2008-10-07, including release of the new
kernel build 2.6.27-6. I had just rebooted in order to apply the kernel
upgrade.

A grep search which traversed /usr/share/doc produced the following
error messages, confirmed by a manual scan of the directories involved:
grep: warning: doc/ubuntu-artwork/html/images/images: recursive
directory loop

The fix suggested above ( LANG="en_US.UTF-8" startx ) works for
KDE3.5.x. I still cannot bring up KDE4, however.

added complete Gnome and Xubuntu desktops. During a cycle of active
development, I do an "aptitude --with-recommends dist-upgrade" twice
daily.
