In Ubuntu karmic, there is still no menu item. As upstream doesn't
provide one, I think the package maintainer should add an own and remove
the Debian-specific menu entry which apparently is ignored.
I am attachign a patch for the karmic 0.9.7 package.

I see a grey background for Pidgin and Twinkle.
Looking at /usr/share/pixmaps/pidgin/tray/16, I find this application
ships *.ico files *shock and horror*. I don't think this is related

And the question is why this is happening. The pixmaps used have an
intact transparent background and are in no way special compared to
