currently implements EFI/uEFI 1.1 on their machines. Windows 7 64 bit
requires uEFI 2.0 the same may be true of ubuntu/grub2. Open refits
console and type ver to see the EFI version.

I too had encountered this bug. I went to update manager and hit apply
updates. It got stuck on setting up samba for half an hour until I
followed johny's advice and type "sudo service smbd stop" in terminal.
The updates then continued on their own after that.

I was also affected by this bug, it is related to some FM2 motherboards , MSI

The fix for this bug is to edit your GRUB file BEFORE you restart your system

I had and still have a Partial Upgrade available to my 12.04 to 14.04
system. I did not so the P-Upgrade and rebooted for other reasons. Upon
return to my Ubuntu login the screen was shrunk and it would not let me
log in resulting in a login loop of returning me back to the login
