Ah, I see. It's in the way Ubuntu One synchronises directories outside its 'base' directory. Maybe Ubuntu One should get support for using XDG variables in the name somehow? It could be adapted to replace the value of $RANDOM_XDG_VAR with "$XDG_RANDOM_XDG_VAR" in directory paths when saving them.
