If the package is so broken in Debian, is there a bug filed in Debian
BTS with a suitably high severity? It sounds like what you're describing
is Debian's "grave" but your bugs I see are only "important".
This often kicks Debian maintainers into gear since a "grave" bug is
release-critic

So we are now (16.10) in sync with Debian, but that package is sadly
quite broken. Tbh, the old package in Universe was also broken, just
for different reasons. The reason now is the Debian package has issues.
