Even i would suggest you to connect to a modem with
ethernet interface.
if u have ethernet interface in ur pc then pls call ur ISP to
give u a modem with ethernet interface.
in that case jus plugin and u will be connected to interface.
once u are conversant with Linux then u can try hacking aroun

Are you sure your modem is supported under linux?
and its correctly configured. as usb LAN is problematic under any os.
better shift to Ethernet connections
