1) you can't run the HAL scripts manually, they are supposed to be called by
HAL only
2) proc isn't supported by HAL anymore, at least not the interfaces from the
generic video module
3) where is the output of lshal? Which desktop

I've got the same hardware as Sympy, and exactly the same experience.
Way back in late feisty, this was one percentage amt (approx 10%) was
given to one button press. AFAIK this is gpm. Early gutsy, it managed

Same here pioruns (dual core) but it does take about 30 secs for firefox
to lock up. It's actually possible to close the tab that the page is
in to alleviate the problem, so it's not a complete lockup.

After launching firefox I am unable to start any other new applications.
All the programs I started before firefox work fine and can open new windows.
For example, when I try to start synaptic from a terminal, I get the following

How can I get virtuabox work on kernel 2.6.24-18-generic kernel on
AMD64 Ubuntu?
Install virtualbox-ose-modules-generic.
It's available in the hardy-updates repository (although the new kernel itself
came through hardy-security).
