I have the same issue here, VLC was installed prior to 8.04 (probably on
Gutsy or Feisty). When I noticed vlc was not installed properly (that is
had generic icon in menu) so attempted to reinstall had the above issue.
Then uninstalled vlc and plugins (pulse and esd), then re-installed and
the bug

LaToune, thanks for filing the bug report. Unfortunately unless you can
reproduce this bug with a driver supported by Ubuntu, ie in the official
ubuntu repositories, there's not much the devs can do to help.

Same thing happened to me today. Dell Vostro 1200 laptop with Ubuntu
8.10, which I upgraded from Hardy.
At the time, GDM was running but my Gnome\Openbox session wasn't logged
in. I did have rtorrent running inside a screen, which I'd started via
ssh, detached and logged off the ssh session.

I have the same problem dating back to when I first installed 8.04 using
Wubi. I hoped it would be fixed by upgrading to 8.10 but no such luck.

I said a few comments back that the the solution from thinkwiki worked
for a while and then stopped working, but it now looks more complicated
than that. Middle button scrolling seems to come and go. I'm not yet
sure what triggers this, but I think it might have something to do with
suspend-resume

I can confirm also that the problem remains in 8.10 final.
A bit annoying because I use this machine to stream video to a media
device and every time I boot it up I have to go into the computer, click
the ntfs drive I want to mount, get the error message and then click it
again. I seem to
amsn now ships with libsnack2
tkdnd will first need to be added in the repositories before it can be added to
amsn
