I have managed to move onto a stock Intrepid kernel from the kernel
mentioned in this report.
I still have the GRUB menu entry and it broadly works, so I could pursue
this report if necessary.
However, given that AFAICT the stock ubuntu 8.10 kernel is working as
well as the custom kernels is

Updated this morning, removed the 'use ooffice dialogs' in options/General
clicked on the Pdf Export button and, it works !!
So everything get back to normal : fine !!!
