Ubuntu (and all other Linux distros) install a bare minimum set of hardware drivers guaranteed to make it work on a range of hardware at first run - advantage of Freedom - it costs nothing to bundle an already available driver on a Linux CD (or DVD, as is becoming more frequent).
I replaced an Asus mainboard having Nvidia graphics with a Gigabyte mainboard having Ati graphics - Ubuntu booted up and asked about Ati restricted drivers. Thats it! The vendor was gaping like a fish - on Windows, this would have entailed at least a low resolution login, with lots of new devices found and what not. -- Rohit V.
