I tried both and were found working well in XP, but even the pen drive were
not even recognised, not shown in the display.

how many pen drives did you try? any idea on what the file system of pen
drive is? ntfs? fat32?

Well, I un-installed all packages related to network-manager, chose to
re-install from the dvd repo
