through synaptic and then install the Alsa sound package and needed
dependancies. thats all i did.. once the modules are loaded open the

I forgot to mention i am using 9.10 UNR Karmic.. it instals pulse audio

For my own system I:
Added the repository
sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install ricoh-r5u87x cheese
sudo r5u87x-loader
reboot
cheese
Everything seemed to work fine. It seems that after running
r5u87x-loader a reboot is necessary for the changes
