I beg to differ with ibidem, I am seeing this in Lucid, and at times as
with Jaunty and Karmic, there are times when it even becomes near
impossible to connect to the AP.

Applying xserver-xorg-video-intel from karmic-proposed has fixed this

I have this issue still with 2.6.31-18-generic on my XPS M1330 with an Intel
4965 card.
BIOS set to toggle Bluetooth only with the killswitch.
If switch is off or on no wireless on coldboot.

I have fixed the problem I was having with graphics and currently
running in vesa mode - however, mountall does not connect to plymouth is
still occuring
