Question from a n00b: currently I am running Ubuntu 9.10 and used the package
manager to install EPD. Good to hear the issue is solved in Debian, but how can
I make it work in Ubuntu? I read the workarounds in the duplicate bug report
425957, but fail to see how to implement this.

I have the same problem, the same hardware. When I installed Karmic
Beta, i got the microphone working, changing a bit of things in alsa-
mixer. I don't remember wich beta version it was. Maybe RC1... Then when
I installed the final version, it didn't work anymore... There has been
a downgrade!

I also get this for files without a extension. However I can only reproduce
this for some filenames. So if I rename any PDF file to
Timo's workaround seem to work for me too. Both stick and touchpad and
all buttons work now ok.

This has been working fine for me now under Karmic/proposed...
Sleep/resume works without problem from a Kernel point of view.
The nVidia 185 64bit drivers behave a little weirdly after resume in
that they affect Docky and Firefox's dropdown but that's a completely
separate issue.

OK, thanks for the great explanation. I've made progress, too. I found a
way to boot the Windows installation (with this nice application:
http://www.paragon-software.com/home/hdm-personal/ ) without touching
the MBR of the system.
Now, is there a way to clean the MBR inside Windows or
ok, so I found the problem. The pcap that wyatt earp attached
(excellent info, thanks wyatt) shows the same scenario I'm seeing at
home, where the DHCP server's DHCPACK message includes two (identical)
subnet mask options.
Now, I'm no DHCP expert, but RFC 2131, Page 23 says
Options may appear
ugh, accidentally posted that message in the middle of editing it.
So, the subnet_number function sees an address of 4 bytes, but a netmask
of 8 bytes and fails.
Where I was headed is that I think dhclient should be modified to ignore
duplicate options sent by the server.

I've found how Pidgin handles this issue very well for tabbed chat
windows.
When you're currently focused on a chat window, I get the upper right
notification about a new message and a new tab is added in the current chat
