Still happens it the latest Lucid (I generally test LTS releases, so I
have Karma every two years). It also happens in the latest Debian
Testing netinstall.
My best guess is that this only happens with this particular model of

I confirm. After all those kernel, firmware, drm and xorg updates, X is finally
working with modeset dri glx :-)

OK what happened was the following : The side pane width got to zero and was

Automatic display brightness adjustment on battery doesn't work correctly for
arbitrary brightness levels.
The system appears to expect the starting brightness to always be 100%, so
falls down when it isn't.

Ubuntu better. However, according to this report, you are not using the
most recent version of some package for your Ubuntu release. Please
upgrade to the most recent version and let us know if you are still

I'm also seeing this just about every time on the most recent images.
Earlier on, I was seeing stuff more like was in bug #522858. However, I
didn't yet have a consistent way to reproduce it. Have you experienced
that (possibly related?) one as well?

I don't know the PowerDevil thing, but it seems to me that
1. /etc/acpi/power.sh calls /usr/sbin/pm-powersave.
2. pm-powersave calls run_hooks defined in /usr/lib/pm-utils/pm-functions.
3. run_hooks executes /usr/lib/pm-utils/power.d/anacron with an
Modern monitors don't suffer burn, and nearly all computer monitors are
green and set to automatically power down anyway, so perhaps the
screen saver should be removed completely (other than the stub that
shuts off power)
In these times, screen savers are no more than a passive game, they
serve
