It seems the UI's model is directly implemented in a SQLite DB, so every
UI call is blocked while accessing a DB. Nevertheless, I don't
understand why the DB processing can't take place on a separate thread
that updates the UI. The UI could show old information and still remain
responsive!

I'm using Debian squeeze now, and the same bug happens on the same hardware.
Note that it only happens on my desktop machine, my laptop doesn't show the
symptomps (even with the same USB keyboard), though also having Ubuntu 10.04.
For me it only happens with shift, other keys seem immune to it.
Due to no reply, I have given up trying to use this app. Also, as of this
time, the new LTS distro does not boot on this system. Thanks for inquiring.

BTW The X crash reported in #38 probably wasn't caused by the
nedit/lesstif/Xorg problem.
I had the same behaviour without nedit running, and I had music playing every
time the crash occurred - it looks like pulseaudio may be causing it. Sorry
about the noise.

This happened because somebody inappropriately removed (at least some
of) the -17 kernel udebs while d-i was still built against them. The
latter was because I had the temerity to be on holiday for a day. Shame
on me.
I've uploaded d-i built against -19, and this should sort it out.

Are you using the microphone jack or the built-in microphone?
Can you try the instructions here:

connector combobox between Microphone 1 and Microphone 2 and see if that
helps?
