As a workaround, really annoying one thou, you can start the freebsd
guest and connect to the console with vnc. Start hammering the enter key
before the countdown screen, so you can get an enter keypress in
instantly as that screen shows up. Then the guest will continue booting.

looks like on-screen keyboards can type into the unity dash search when
using Ubuntu 2d, but still not when using Ubuntu 3d

9.1 final will definitively be in oneiric. Presumably it'll hit between
beta 1 and 2.
It will also save users yet another upgrade, they can upgrade from 8.4
straight to 9.1 instead of 8.4 - 9.0 - 9.1.
