interestingly, if I boot with kernel 3.0.0-19-generic, recording works
fine, when selecting the 'front mic' input channel. also, the pulse
audio mixing panel will show all input channels: line-in, microphone and
front microphone (with kernel 3.2, only a single input channel is shown)

actually, the issue is fixed not by reverting back to the old kernel,
but by adding the following module option into /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-
base.conf :
options snd-hda-intel model=intel-x58
