It seems to have been caused by the AdBlock Plus extension. Disabling it
is enough to bring things back in order in firefox 58

Had the same problem on a Dell PowerEdge T430 with Ubuntu 16.10.
Installing module mgag200 as suggested by Ivo Straka's (approach n. 1) worked
for me. I followed the recipe in

just changing the kernel
I also have a separate /var filesystem and had a problem with autofs, which was
cured by the solution proposed in #13.
