This has to do with ACPI.
I solved this problem on my Asus Zenbook UX31E (with latest BIOS) this way :
1) I addedacpi_osi='!Windows 2012' acpi_backlight=vendor in
/etc/default/default so that the line looks like
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash acpi_osi='!Windows 2012'
Have you tried setting the brightness using the Britghtness Lock
window, instead of using the Fn keys ?
On my Zenbook, the Fn keys work but their action is not saved ; on the
opposite, the settings I choose Britghtness Lock are saved and
restored at boot.

Same here in 13.04 (upgraded from 12.10). Whenever I perform a search in the
Dash, More suggestions is the first category to appear, followed by
Application and, much later, Files.
Doughy's tip works great (thanks!) but the average user shouldn't be asked to
come to this. I hope all the
I have just upgraded to kernel 3.8.0-19 and I still have the issue.
I have created a small project with the code that reproduce the issue:

I will write a very small example of this issue and the procedure to

Hi,
I have no idea why, but some decorations appeared a few minutes ago. It only
affects Firefox though (see attachment). It affected Files, but when I closed
the window and tried opening new ones, the decoration failed to appear. All
windows still open maximized.

I finally stumbled upon the source of the problem. I installed the
ubuntu-mobile-default-settings package, not knowing what it would really do (I
thought it was kind of complementary with ubuntu-mobile-icons). But it
installed Devilspie and forced all my windows to start maximized and without

Hi,
I upgraded my Ubuntu 12.10 32bits to 13.04. Except for a few problems
with my graphic card, everything seemed to work fine. But since
yesterday, I have lost all window decorations. Every single window opens
maximized, but when I resize them, they don't show any
Same problem, same call trace, on Kubuntu 13.04 upgraded today from
12.10, on an Asus UL80VT laptop. It worked well before (on 12.10).

For me, it is a consequence of bug #1169984 related to the HDMI audio
driver which prevents pm-powersave to terminate,

check /var/log/pm-powersave.log. Before the workaround, my pm-

Hi,
I upgraded to Ubuntu 13.04, and all went mostly well (except the usual
problems with my ATI graphic card). Everything worked fine yesterday,
but when I booted my computer today, I discovered a strange behavior:
all application start maximized, and when I click on the
I tried a few things throughout the day but am unable to find a fix. This is
way beyond my small abilities...
Maybe my .xsession-errors could be of use? I attach it here.

Upgrading to Ubuntu 13.04 doesn't solved the issue with kernel version
3.8.0-19.
And of course removing the usual include solve the issue.
