I screwed some stuff up that required me to reinstall the ubuntu-desktop
package, and I realized that indicator-sound wasn't installed along with
it. I had to install it manually (after trying to figure out which
package it was that was responsible for my now-missing volume

I have used rpmstrap in Dapper and it worked fine. rpmstrap in Edgy
does not work. Here is the output of my session with rpmstrap:
