I haven't been bothered by this bug for some time now. I don't remember
exactly when the symptoms stopped happening, but I think it was after I
upgraded my ssd over a year ago. It could also have been a new release
that fixed the problem. I still have the old 8GB ssd laying somewhere,
but I don't
I don't think this is an NVIDIA bug though, I don't have NVIDIA drivers
installed and I'm still affected.

I think the time at which the symptoms occur might be related to the
time you turned on the computer. After you turned on the computer some
program produces the bug, and then produces it every hour.

1. Install the simple compiz settings manager from the Ubuntu Software Center.
2. Start it by going to System - preferences - Simple CompizConfig Settings
Manager
3. Go to the 'Edges' tab.
4. Click on one of the edges, and then click on 'General Options: Show Desktop'

Hmm, after the workaround was suddenly turned off, I reapplied it, and found
that /etc/apt/preferences.d had corrupted. Instead of a directory it turned
into a file which crashed apt-get. Opening the file showed nothing of interest
(an empty file) while it was about 13KB in size.

Another affected person here. I can confirm that vboxdrv doesn't start
at boot either, tty1 to 6 don't work and that 'sudo start rc-sysinit'
fixes it. Manually executing that is, of course, not an ideal situation.

Chris' idea originally didn't do the trick for me though. I still do not
know what did. xserver-xorg-input-synaptics was installed when the bug
appeared. I tried reinstaling it at the time, and even purging it and
install it again. Nothing made any difference, but after a few updates
it got fixed

I'm willing to give you SSH access to my netbook, but you have got to tell me
how to do so. I do not have any experience with that. I must tell you that I
did apply the workaround yesterday. I can uncomment the lines if necessarily.

The file in the workaround does not exist. In Lucid, apparently, that
file has been judged obsolete and been removed. There's probably a file
which does the same, or some other workaround that will do this every
boot.
I attached an .sh file for the convenience, and I changed 'sudo' to
'gksudo' so

I can confirm that I still have this bug having all updates installed in
Lucid.
I was told (by Martin Pitt) to execute the following command:
sudo strace -vvfs1024 -o /tmp/probe-smart.txt /lib/udev/udisks-probe-ata-smart

For some reason, this bug stopped affecting me. Maybe the gnome version
that recently came through the update manager fixes this? I'm able to
use the touchpad again, so I recommend you guys to just go to the update
manager and install the updates. I don't know which one fixed this bug

I did some testing; and previous versions of xserver-xorg-input-synaptics don't
work. I thought it would work as a workaround, but it didn't. The
1.2.2-1ubuntu1 version had the same problem (apparently, the current version
and 1.2.2-1ubuntu1 were released 41 seconds after oneother) and

Sadly your solution doesn't work with me. I tried rebooting, I added
touchfreeze to the startup applications, turned the touchpad on and off on both
touchfreeze and Fn + F7. All to no avail.
I hope there's an other way to do this :S This obviously must be fixed

Is there any way of notifying this bug report to the xserver-xorg-input-
synaptics developers? If they don't know this bug, they won't be fixing
this bug. I don't know how that works though. I think it has something
to do with the 'also affects project' button, but I couldn't find that

Still having the bug with a totally updated Lucid today, but it didn't
appear at boottime. It became less and less over time, but it is not
fully gone. I got it twice now during this session. Both of them quite

Affects me too, but only after I manually upgraded to OpenOffice 3.2 by some
ppa, on Karmic.
I don't know what changed, but other themes do work perfectly. They do seem to
change the font color.

So I booted without xorg.conf and it booted without proprietary drivers, and
basicly in low graphics mode. It made my fps 60 (as shown in Monitor Resolution
Settings) instead of 50, and named it 'laptop'
