I usually find it out by checking speed on www.speedtest.net. The usual
speed I get ranges from 500kbps to 700kbps.

Oh, I missed the fact that you are getting the Ubuntu logo screen. In that
case, make sure the image on your USB device is not corrupt.

You need to put your prioritise your USB device from BIOS boot settings and
put it at the top of the list, atleast above your hard drive.

My experiences with LibreOffice has been pretty good. In fact, I did not
face any problem on migrating from OpenOffice to LibreOffice.
Also, I'm not sure, but I felt LibreOffice running somewhat faster compared
to OpenOffice.
