Stephen, I am sorry that you feel this way. As I said, solution is to
install digikam from karmic-backports repository. You can install just
digikam (and kipi-plugins), if you are concerned about unsupported
status of backports (to prevent other backported packages to install).
For digikam
Digikam 1.0.0 final release is available in Karmic backports repositories. See
this page for more info:

ubuntu shouldn't package beta version of digikam; needs upgrading to fix 200
bugs, and in particular import crashes #8 most reported KDE
Agreed, and true, shipping beta version in Karmic was mistake, we should
avoid doing this in future. However, changes between Beta5 and final
version are too big to be accepted as Stable Release Update, that is why
we had to resort to Backports.

Yep. Current package does not build even in ppa (with universe depends), due to
missing this patch:
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=217239
We may just wait for 2.1.1 which is due next week.

I think your problem may be related to use of PulseAudio in
GNOME/Ubuntu, while KDE 4.3 used in 9.10 is not supporting PA yet. KDE
4.4 should have proper PulseAudio support and may fix your issue.
If you would like to try out KDE 4.4 beta2 (there will be also RC in
around a week), you could try

I got confirmation from pyexiv2 developer that he might even release 2.0
release in time for Lucid, but he will also provide patch for 0.1.3
release just in case if we cannot get 2.0 in for Lucid.
I think we are ready to sync exiv2 0.19 from debian/unstable and move
with transition.
