I was right about the driver thing. I've installed 173 again and Firefox
is behaving normally again, so probably it was not a Firefox-bug after
all.

Change the default policy context in both
/etc/dbus-1/system.d/NetworkManager.conf and /etc/dbus-1/system.d/nm-
applet.conf so it says 'allow' instead of 'deny'.

The driver is now just a package that is in the repository, its only
that the restriced driver manager does not install it for you.

I'm sorry, the bug is back, it does not seem that an update is the cause

this problem on hardy or earlier.
