the ubuntu package does not track the git fork.
adding yasm does only seem to effect some parts in the internal avcodec
library, while the ubuntu package is supposed to be compiled against the
system ffmpeg where this makes no difference.
Am I missing something?

the issue is that mplayer rc3 FTBFS against ffmpeg 0.6. This will be
rectified by the next rc4 release of mplayer
as interim solution, I'll upload a copy of mplayer that uses its
internal copy of ffmpeg, which is based on ffmpeg 0.5.1

I can confirm the observation in comment #7. This means that the problem
is not in ffmpeg, since both ffplay and mplayer when using ffaac play
back that file properly.
However when using mplayer with libfaad, playback is distorted.

I have to admit that I didn't follow the openal package lately in
debian, so I'm not sure I'm really qualified to comment on its
inclusion. However, I do know that openal-soft upstream is fairly
reasonable and cautious with his releases, so I think

I did have a look but didn't find the exact change that fixed this. If
someone manages to create a minimal backport of this fix, then it can be
included for lucid. otherwise I fear not.
