I changed the dependencies in rdesktop 1.5 in this way:
- download rdesktop_1.5.0-1_i386.deb from a debian mirror
(now is also available in ubuntu feisty)
- do the following on a terminal window:
dpkg -x rdesktop_1.5.0-1_i386.deb rdesktop_1.5.0-1a_i386
dpkg -e rdesktop_1.5.0-1_i386.deb
I have the same problem now in edgy with rdesktop version 1.4.1-1 and
nvidia-glx.
nv driver works well, but the refresh is slower.
Didn't have any problem in dapper with the same rdesktop version.
I have solved it by using rdesktop 1.5.0-1 from debian unstable (after
modifying its dependencies).
Problem solved after upgrading to console-setup (1.7ubuntu19).
See https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/console-setup/+bug/66929
I think that this bug is the same as #66929 and should now be closed.

console-setup (1.7ubuntu19) also solves #63615, which I think is the
same bug.

I have installed kubuntu on a new machine. The bug was not present at the
beginning but appeared after a few reboot.
I had always appended the following option in the kernel line of
/boot/grub/menu.lst:
vga=791
After removing this option the bug disappeared (this also happened on another
Yes, moving S13kdm to S99kdm also works on my system. This is because I can see
for a moment the TTY1 console before the kdm login screen.
Moving S13kdm to S21kdm does not work, so the scripts that are run in the
middle on my system are:
S21nfs-common
S25bluetooth
S89anacron
S89atd
S89cron
Same problem on my machine. When I try to type the password at the first
login the input box gets filled with asterisks. The only way to fix it
is to switch to tty1 and restart kdm. The same machine has no problems
with dapper.
