Well, ubuntu is based on debian, most of the pacakages used by ubuntustudio come directly from debian syncs. Bear in mind that making a distro is hard and needs a lot of development time and effort. Also, I dont think that UbuntuStudio will change to debian as its upstream :D Just for curiosity,

Te problem isnt on the WM per se, but on the amount of lib it needs to load to work, plus the weight of its associated applications. For instance, thunar (XFCE file manager) Is way more lighter than Nautilus (gnome). Using Gtk doesnt mean that XFCE is as heavy as Gnome. You should try xfce and

rtprio is intended to be configured on the ubuntustudio controls v0.6. I found some problem to set it up my self, you need to have the card pluged in to scan for irqs etc.(I have a firewire interface). I think a GUI helper for this could be very helpfull. I think we could edit the Ubuntustudio

edit only the video and leave the audio alone. you can use cinelerra or other software for video, it just need to be jack transpoort compatible. then with xjadeo you can sync it with ardour usin jack transport. This is the most reliable solution if you want full audio quality/control.
