there, only slightly less in volume. That's probably why I thought it
was gone.
However, playing around with PULSE_NO_SIMD on and off, I found a new

However, assuming that the problem was in the config files is probably stupid,
it's probably the config file setting that is somehow triggering the bug in the

Yes, same with pavucontrol. However, it is most prominent up to about
13% volume, then gone (or really quiet) but getting louder with the
volume starting at 14%. It's really as if the amplifier was
overamplifying the sound.

I get some weird behavior.
1) I use gpilotd with WebDAV contacts in a normal fashion - it crashes
constantly
2) I use gpilotd with apport started - it doesn't crash
3) I use gpiloted after stopping apport - it doesn't crash
4) I reboot, I use gpilotd a few times - after some time it starts
It just crashed again, with apport running.
Unfortunately, apport does not generate a crash report from the module crash.

I tried the blacklist/modprobe approach. It never crashes, and there are no
errors in dmesg.
Also, using the wireless after about 30 reloads of the driver does not crash
it, it works fine.
So I would say this might be related, but is not the same bug.

Just to comment on that specific part: I get hangs with quiet usplash as well.
That's how I found the bug at first: It would just hang, and I wondered why, so
I removed quiet usplash.

installed the build utilities, did make

I've had the exact same problem twice now.
I should note that I upgraded from 8.04 to intrepid some time ago.
After the cleaning up phase, everything seems to be done, but the window
doesn't close and can't be closed manually.
The terminal widget shows regular apt messages, nothing special.
I tried debugging compiz, g-s dbus, but it's really impossible without
any knowledge of the structure of these programs (and for both, there
doesn't seem to be any good debug output). dbus-monitor only confirmed
that the screensaver is stopped.

much like to see Ubuntu 8.10 on these. I just want You to understand
that it's *very* late, maybe too late, to get it done.

I'd like to note (as said in duplicate Bug #252150) that blinking on
traffic is bad behavior in terms of usability.
A blinking LED (or GUI element, ...) is hard to ignore, and will in most humans
gain focus constantly, and annoy them.
Both having traffic as well as being connected are standard

Yes, I tested this.
It felt weird first, because I always tried to debug and started from console,
and it just worked.
However, the next time I tried it without the console just after restarting the
machine, and shutdown worked fine.
So it's definitely happening only after some time, or after
