In my case this was due to a symbolic link from
/etc/bash_completion.d/acroread.sh -
/opt/Adobe/Reader9/Resource/Shell/acroread_tab. After removing the
symbolic link and starting a new bash shell, things were back to normal.

Another vote for backporting the fix to 12.10, pretty please -- compiz /
gnome-classic is quite unusable if it randomly changes your settings

Public bug reported:
I upgraded my 12.04 system to 12.10 and emboss-explorer's menus stopped
working properly. The apps all work fine run through jumbos but that
doesn't help my students who need to access my server via that web.
Problem also occurs on a clean install of 12.10 - emboss is fine
To be specific - emboss-explorer is unusable in 12-10.
