I have the same problem on my Dell Latitude C640 with login screen set
to 1360x768 instead of 1024x768.
What can/should I provide for further investigation?

I have attached a debug log file as requested. I was using Human theme
when f-spot was launched and then changed the controls to human-login in
the gnome appearance settings. In this case all f-spot elements changed
appearance as expected other than the histogram whos background remained

As per Stefan's comments, this does not work for me either using Dell
latitide C640 on Ubuntu 9.10. It has been this way for so long I have
given up all hope of it being rectified...
Is anybody even working on this bug?

Thanks mate! I cleared a number of obsolete .DCOPserver_hostname__1
files from different users on the system which resolved the problem.

Same problem using Atheros AR5413 802.11abg NIC (rev 1)
Network manager hangs around until poked with iwpriv ath0 mode 3, or
iwconfig ath0 essid MYSSID..
Alternative workaround is to set router to support g only. Since doing
this NetworkManager connects automatically, BUT now knetworkmanager
