After some more experimentation, I believe I have repaired the problem
of
MATE Menu Places Home Folder (or Desktop or other location, like
another filesystem)
opening the selection in Audacious.
First I note that even on the affected machines, opening a folder in the
file manager worked
Additional Facts:
I have installed Ubuntu Mate 14.10 on 4 computers and then installed
Audacious. I find one of the four is NOT affected by this problem.
On one of the 3 affected computers, I have installed Ubuntu MATE 14.04
in dual boot and find that the problem did not show up in 14.04.
Had this error few minutes ago...
Solution:
sudo apt-get remove libgpg-error0:i386
sudo reboot
sudo apt-get wine
sudo reboot
and the error dont comes back.

While it certainly wasn't an issue with my installation (I even
downloaded the package directly and un-ar'ed it to check), I can confirm
that is fixed in cifs-utils 2:6.0-1ubuntu2 at the very least.

Hi,
this happens still in Trusty with all updates (todate: 13.07.2014, 20:00) and
kvm is unusable with this. We wanted to use kvm instead of virtualbox/vmware
but with this, you can forget that.
Why on Earth is it a wontfix?

This nasty bug still exists in Ubuntu 14.04 (64 Bit) with the file
manager (and probably related to thumbnail creation!?). Very sad.

I have confirmed this in the default Ambiance theme, and have included a
fix for anybody interested which has been tested thoroughly on my
system:
Before doing anything, if you are currently using Ambiance and it is
your active theme, please switch to another theme such as default
Radiance.
I still have this problem with the latest Ubuntu 14.04 release, see also

Αν και φαίνεται να υποστηρίζεται to
3d, έχει τελικά πρόβλημα.
Same for me. Sony vaio SVF1521KSNB with ubuntu 13.10 as well as 14.04.
ANy fix is appreciated .
