physical CapsLock key, which I use for Escape, has become CapsLock
again.

Here is a test with Hebrew:
$ convert -background white -fill black -size 320x320 -encoding Unicode
-gravity center -pointsize 40 label:'שלום!' test01.png
This test concludes that Imagemagic prints Hebrew backwards as well.

When an application is installed which uses the standard tools (xdg-mime
install and xdg-desktop-menu install) to register shortcuts and mime
types, Kubuntu's default types are sometimes changed. Neither of these
commands should set the default association for a mime type
The OP left, but I can confirm this bug. It is a pain!
