on my vaio tgz..., the webcam consistently works ONLY after reboot,
but never immediately upon powering on.
this is so since 8.04, thru recently installed 10.04:-(
any ideas?

after some editing and Latexing and previewing with xdvi, reverse-
search, the frame seems to get tired of me, freezes and I have to xkill
REALLY have no stomach left for manually compiling packages and
sorting out compile errors one by one (the reason why I could not
realize the ideal desktop dream with Debian)

uh-uh, no, it duplicates image, doesn't look good. but it did work fine under
8.04:-(

the quirks=2 option didn't work for me either.

I used to be a supporter of linux/ubuntu.
I changed from 8.04 to 8.10 because of eth/wired/wireless problems.
Now wireless is no longer a problem. but wired still is.
And the builtin webcam (vaio vgn-tz170n) is no longer detected, e.g.,
