i confirm exactly the same problem (i.e. same ubuntu version, same wifi card,

got NM to run again, yet device is unmanaged.
to get NM running check whether you have old versions of libnl*
installed in /usr/lib or /usr/local/lib (see
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=739056)
for the unmanaged device problem i have no solution yet. nonetheless

i tried to set /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf
manage=true, but that didn't seem to improve anything. in fact, after
this change my wifi was down and stayed down until i reset the previous
change.
nm-tool doesn't launch since 'apparently' no NM is running. nm-applet
and if nm-applet is killed first:

I may confirm this bug on a Lenovo R61. Under Ubuntu 7.10 wireless
worked fine, using the restricted driver, but using 8.04 no LED and no
connection seems possible.
