What about adding bzip2 compression? I have no idea how to do it but I
once found a pdf with it and the size without the compression was much
smaller than without it.

You can do it with 'ark' for example. The size will reduce, but to
approximately 50-60%
try the commandline pdftk and read its man pages.
also, read up on pdf versions 1, 2, 3, and 4, as well as its flavours:
pdf for print, pre-press, book, and mobile.

I am thinking it must be the content of the pdf that is the problem.
If there are a few jpgs, then you are bound to have no compression at
all - infact you might see increase in the size.
I learnt that pdf, gif jpg, mpg are already a compressed format and
cannot be compressed.

original pdf

My experiments with this were disastrous. The size increased to 10x.
If you have had different experience I would be interested in knowing
how exactly do you achieve a smaller size.
