Hi, The New Jersey and Pennsylvania (USA) approved LoCo teams made a group order from shop.canonical.com to reduce individual's shipping costs[1], and we thought we were successful until the shipper (UPS) called and informed us Canonical didn't provide the documentation to clear the order through shipping and didn't pay any of the customs charge.
[1] https://wiki.ubuntu.com/NewJerseyTeam/GroupOrders The group order sub-total was $266.01, the shipping was $49.30, and the total customs charge was $59.73. In other words, there is a hidden shipping surcharge of 121%. Our customs charge includes two charges. The customs fee was $36.73. The fee for Canonical's[1] failure to include documentation on the fabric composition of the shirts we ordered was $23.00. [1] Merchandise Mania is the vendor that fulfills shop.canonical.com's orders. I suspect Canonical doesn't know Merchandise Mania, their agent, is incorrectly shipping international orders. The Canonical shop can calculate customs charge before U.S. residents place their order. The Canonical shop can also bill patrons for the customs charge and pay that charge when shipping. That way no one else will wake up to a UPS guy asking for a check. The fee for incomplete documentation is unnecessary. If Canonical calculates the customs charge themselves, they'll also automatically generate the necessary documentation. * * * I'm sending this to the US teams mailing list to warn my fellow U.S. residents about this hidden surcharge. I'm sending this to the marketing mailing list in the hopes someone can forward this message to an appropriate person at Canonical. Please CC me if you do. * * * At the URL below is a copy the charges breakdown I sent to the people participating in the group order. http://gnuisance.net/archives/cgo/bill.txt Thanks for your consideration, -Dave -- David A.
