I'm not sure if I've done something wrong or how I should proceed.
Checkbox is getting a new user interface very soon, written in Qt. The checkbox-app-testing application is a variant of Checkbox which still uses the Gtk interface. I guess eventually it will also use the checkbox-qt interface, but for now what you can do is enable the 'Universe' repository from within the live environment:

1.) Launch Software Center
2.) Edit > Software Sources
3.) Select Community maintained free and open source software (universe)
4.) Try again!
