You'll never get to the installer unless the kernel boots first :)
I think the server CD may
Maybe. There are some broken PAEs in the midst (I think some x86 macs
are in this class).

Maybe the installer could detect that the cpu in not supported, warn
the user about it and propose to install a valid kernel for this cpu?

How about a note for Geode LX and NX, Epia, some Macs ...?
Most of us aren't stuffing more than 4GB in our servers
The workaround is fine, it just isn't obvious.

What would you expect ? A choice of database (mysql or postgresql) ?
IIRC Drupal needs a database to run.

The package installs fairly easily with a major gotcha and a few minor issues.
Major gotcha.
1) the default drupal install depends on mysql-server running on localhost.
Minor issues.
1) the user must visit http://server_ip/drupal5/install.php to
complete the database initialization
2) the user
generates a kernel panic on reboot after install. workaround is
ubuntu-alternative command line install
perhaps a kernel option on server installs. we could call it
"failsafe" for old hardware
