Jamie, the various backup strategies that I have seen are all suited to
using sudo. They all run a program or script which receives some
arguments at run time. That includes rsync over ssh. Could you please

Its a similar problem, (resolv.conf no longer a symlink) but I think its
related to running the openvpn manager and bailing out half way through
a vpn setup.
Apologies I dont have anything more conclusive, but I do recall it
breaking resolv.conf and thus DNS which I manually fixed.

If it helps, this happened again when vsftp tried to upgrade, and I
found that if I kill the vsftpd process as Update Manager is hanging on
its update, Update Manager continues its work. Maybe there's a deadlock
