I traced the problem to a bug in ext/pdo/pdo_sql_parser.c that must have
been introduced somewhere around 5.2.6. I started working on a fix but
then thought to replace that file with one from a newer version of PHP.
I tried replacing with the one from 5.2.10.dfsg.1-2ubuntu4 and the bug

Thanks for the report.
I was able to reboot a Karmic eucalyptus-cloud system without trouble.
It did hang for about 60 seconds after Stopping Eucalyptus Cluster
Controller, but it eventually did continue the shutdown, reboot, and
come back up succcessfully.

I routinely use its IP address when accessing this server from my Ubuntu
box. Windows, of course, uses DNS or netbios name resolution.
I ran the smbclient -L test twice - once in each mode. I did this in a
few spare moments at work, and have only just looked in detail at the
results.

Reading the script, and Loic's error output, it looks like perhaps Loic
had JAVA_HOME set to /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun, but had no JVM there. As
Soren says, the script finds java in $PATH and this works in all of our
tests.

Whenever I have to do my testing with Eucalyptus, I end up having to do
something like:
sudo rm -rf /etc/eucalyptus /var/lib/eucalyptus /var/log/eucalyptus
..after removing the packages in question. The postrm maintainer script
should really be cleaning up these things.
The reason I used a separate configuration file for CC_NAME was that it
was entirely packaging-specific, and it saved any more fiddling around
with a conffile than was absolutely necessary. I still think it's
appropriate for CC_NAME to be there. For all the VNET_* stuff that's
parsed by upstream
