Thanks for you answer. I removed /etc/passwd.lock, /etc/shadow.lock files and
re-configured the ntp package.

Connecting to such servers from Ubuntu introduces an extensive delay
that you don't get if you connect to such servers directly from a CentOS
box.
The problem is triggered by the delay on reverse lookups that aren't
answered due to the avahi configuration of Ubuntu desktops.

Please give more information on your setup. It probably tries to start
and fail for a reason. Is there anything in the logs (/var/log/samba/)
when it fails to start at boot ? What is your networking setup ?
Wireless, fixed ? Is it configured through networkmanager or
/etc/network/interfaces ?
