(which I don't know how/why somebody at Ubuntu assumed it was fixed).
Calling php from a compgen script work fine in Debian, another
indication that it might be the libedit bug.

You are obviously you are using different sets of packages. You are
using the php-config from 5.2.10 so it will report the API is wrong.
Please list the output of dpkg -l | grep php. If you are running a mix
of Karmic and Lucid then yes you are going to have this problem.

how to find the user, but could not, so went into the process of
installing and reinstalling.

This is not a development issue, it's a support issue. You have a memory
corruption bug (or something similar) in 32-bit kvm on Karmic, which is
supported until April 2011. This bug should be marked confirmed,
severity upgraded, and taken seriously.

note also that the VM itself doesnt hang, its just the disk IO ... if i stop
the hanging process teh VM is usable as before.
if you want to reproduce install rootstock and run:
sudo rootstock -f test -s ubuntu-netbook^
(note that wont give you any access to the VM, try the thing below for this)
