When hostname is properly working on a system all of the following
commands should work as expected:

As the ec2 meta-data, local-hostname, returns the long form of hostname,
I would also propose that an enhancement that a new ec2 meta-data attribute be
added:
local-shortname
that would return the short version of hostname such as is returned from
'hostname -s' on a properly configured sys

Actually I was using virt-manager so I'm not sure what it runs on the
command line. It was a PXE boot to the squeeze 32bit netboot kernel/initrd.
I can provide the XML if that helps...otherwise, what's the best way to
get you the info you need? Just the process footprint from `ps`?

Indeed, looking at the lucid source, I see that the post_install() calls
the execscripts before the --only-chroot checks, whereas
hypervisor.py:install_os(), which installs the bootloader, gets called
after.
I assume it's there for a reason so don't want to blindly move it.

I've not sseen this behavior locally using virtio back-ends in Lucid. I
wonder whether the software raid could have something to do with it. Is
there any way you could hook up another disk, without raid, and try to
reproduce?
This is fixed in natty by the upstart job conversion. (version
1:2.3.14-7ubuntu4)
