Would it suffice to do:
virsh edit myvm
and change the mac address in the definition? Note that if the mac
address doesn't show up in the definition in the editor, you should be
able to add it (using the mac address you want) and it will be respected
the next time.

Could you look 'grep libvirt /var/log/daemon.log' and see if any
messages there explain why libvirt failed? When you do '/etc/init.d
/libvirt-bin start', does anything show up on console?
Is upgrading your maching to 10.04

is this bug fixed for you in the latest natty qemu-kvm? Latest natty is
based on qemu-kvm-0.14.0 release, which you say includes the fixes you
were looking for.
