That did not quite capture the output I was looking for.
They probably need to be run as separate commands as the sudo prompt for
password will get confused.
Any warning messages from sudo testparm are of particular importance.

After running testparm it waits for pressing enter to show a dump of the
service definitions.
I simply wrote '"echo $?" + enter' and misinterpreted the dump as output of my
last command.

Just thought it'd be worth mentioning that this doesn't affect Quantal
as upstream changed behaviour in recent versions, the new upstream
